#1: “Like Real People Do” (Jessica/Casey contemporary)
Right, right, two contemporary dancers doing contemporary, what a miracle they did it well! And yeah, this caused the biggest elimination travesty ever recorded in history (“Say his name, Nigel! Say it!”), but we’re going to ignore all of that for the sake of this post, because I actually have a lot of feelings about this routine.
This routine reminded me of Collide from season 7. I loved that routine because Lauren and Kent were so young and they kept pushing them both to be “mature” and “sexy”, and finally they got a dance where they could just be the teenagers that they were and it still made a really great moment on stage. I feel like the same thing happened here. Jessica, for all her “sexy” dancing, is just an 18 year old girl. Casey is just 19. They really seemed their age in this dance, reveling in the innocence of first love, and I just found it so gorgeous.
Although truly, Casey could have not even been here for all I care. I couldn’t take my eyes off Jessica. I’m so glad she finally got a dance where she could perform and dance with abandon because we’ve never gotten to see her like this before. Her expression was so open and honest, and I kind of forgot she was dancing sometimes because it just…didn’t feel like it. I felt like I was watching a montage in a Nicholas Sparks movie. I don’t even like Nicholas Sparks.
The song and the lighting also had a lot to do with this. Jessica’s yellow dress plus the lighting on the stage went perfectly. I got an ask that said it looked like they were frolicking through a meadow and it really did.SO I really love this routine, you guys, and I hate what it caused because I feel like it soured it somehow. :(
